I started digging through a box of old pictures that go back to the beginning of time and found some that I had forgotten. My first hotrod was a canary yellow 1961 Ford Falcon with a 327 Chevy. I later painted it F8 green. This was back in the day when you didn’t even have to wear a helmet at Lions Drag Strip in Long Beach Calif. 1967. 😎 BB1AE409-57AF-438B-9B74-4DDE462840AD.jpeg 106C880C-50CF-474A-9EE4-03587DB3458D.jpeg

High 12’s wasn’t fast enough even back in the late 60’s so I sold that Falcon and went into partnership with one of my co-workers at Jardine Headers in Garden Grove, Ca on this 1957 Corvette. My engine and trans... his car. We took turns driving. 2BD0C6D4-935C-4955-B55D-FABB2B0329F1.jpeg 3F28F430-793E-4F0D-996B-0ED8C8B149A2.jpeg 78E75549-123C-43BD-A0B8-59B6981B3F04.jpeg

Haha. Just to show you how we did it back then.... check the picture of the motor. No accessories! No water pump! They had a cool down station in the pits where you could open the coolant petcocks (you can see those on the front) and drain the hot water from the block while a cold water hose was stuck in the fill. We put the battery on charge after every pass.

Yes! That’s the exact peddle in that car. You spotted the Moon fuel tank. 😎
They had one with toes, too. :)

I’m sure we had a Mooneyes sticker somewhere on there. That’s a Hays Clutch sticker there behind the rear tire.

Wow, lyons drag strip lots of history and nostalgia and lots of pioneering done at that strip. The drag strip took Don Garlits right foot as a trophy. But he returned there a year later to prove every one wrong with his new rear engine dragster that everybody said wont work. You know the rest, he proved his way was the best way to this day.

Some Lions pics from back then. One of the things I remember most is the spectator stands were right next to the starting line and the blast from the top fuel exhaust would hit you in the face. Not something that can be experienced today  The black Plymouth 426 in the pic has my Jardine Headers :giggle: 13075639473_8a6d629e62_b.jpg 41avMQJ8ueL._AC_UY218_ML3_.jpg

Great nostalgia. Thanks for sharing. I remember Jardine. How about Hooker Headers, Crane cams, Isky (iskendarian)) cams, so many great companies from back in the day.

The falcon ran high 12’s. I didn’t have the money to put a very built motor in it, but it was so light it ran pretty good in spite of the modest power. It was my full time street car and I cruised the Blvd every Friday and Saturday night. I lived American Graffiti. My girlfriend’s father hated me. The Vette was obviously nothing but a bracket drag car. Ran high 10’s which was pretty damn fast for 1968. It was a death trap that never went more than five passes without breaking a axel. There wasn’t a Chev axle left in any junk yard in SoCal by the time we were done. Had to quit when Uncle Sam called and requested my presence in Vietnam Nam. 😳
