Bonneville Salt Flats

Anybody ever been?

I stopped by today just for the photo op enroute to Salt Lake City to meet with a friend. So, I was not prepared to "hit the flats and see what she can do"😂

Still, it's breathtaking and fascinating. Nobody was around either. About 130p. Sunny 63 and very windy.

I would definitely bring a car back if I was going with a group. Or spectate if some land speed folks were there giving it a go.

The salt build up is pretty bad. I would have then needed a really good car wash.

It's one of those things where you have to go all in or not at all.

I lived in Ogden (as a kid) for years and other than driving by, I never made it out onto the flats even once. (I did piss on them once and got in trouble for it from the highway patrol, only because he was writing a ticket to two old ladies that complained that we had exposed ourselves)

What was I saying? Oh, right! At one of the Colorado Mile events I was at, there were some people from the Salt Flat crowd, and we were talking about stuff and I mentioned wanting to take the Kitty to the Flats.

He shook his head and told me not to do it. He said they get four years out of a car before they scrap it.

Why?

He said let me spell it out for you. S A L T flats...

He said it gets up into everything and eats the shit out of it. It sandblasts everything it can see and eats what it can't.

I'm not sure why I never thought of the SALT flats as "salt", but damn.

So, run any car you care about on the Flats?

Nope, not me.

I was wondering about all that. No bueno for me! Even if I did live close by. I would live to make it out there one day as a spectator though.
