So now I’m wondering if I actually bought Redeye Demon axles. Pls look.

Now I realize that different axle sides have different lengths but pls take a look. I’ve installed the drivers side axle so what we are looking at is the original HC axle I just removed, and the pass side Redeye I plan on installing.
First off the HC axle is measurably heavier when lifting. Look at the tube thickness. The HC is about 41-42 mm and the RE is only about 34 mm. The outer hub end of the HC axle is substantially beefier of the two and the diff side of the HC is 4.25 inches long compared to the
other which is about 3 in. Can someone shed some light on this pls? Also, I counted the splines on the RE axle, its got 35 outer and 32 inner. I believe I read either here or the other forum spline counts were 41 and 38. Pls assure me I’ve got the right parts before I continue with this install. Thanks.

You bought the correct axles. Here are pictures of my axles that were in my Demon. The different 41 and 38 splines that they are talking about are the ones on the shafts inside of the C/V itself, not the ones you see on the C/V ends otherwise how do you think they would even go into your Diff or bearing hubs if they changed those.

Don't go by that. They are made of stronger materials and they also put more roller balls in the C/V to handle higher loads. This allowed them to be lighter which allows the car to accelerate faster.

There is one thing I see wrong with the axles though. They are missing the Tone Rings for the ABS Sensors. And they will be hard to put on if you have the axles installed already. Did you buy these used?

You will need to either remove the ones from your HC axles or buy them from MMX Performance. But be very careful with them as you can damage them very easily taking them off or even installing them. They are very thin metal rings with slots put into them with a rubber coating so you don't actually see the slots.

Yes. I removed the ring from my part by gradually drifting it off with a soft piece of wood taping it with a hammer.

Of course thats the first thing I looked up but still seemed odd that the “heavier duty” part is dimensionally smaller and lighter. With no id #’s I would choose the HC part over the other all day long. It’s that much burlier in appearance.

848 & 849 are RE/Demon axles.

748 & 749 are HC axles.

You did good.

They fit, I used the same part number units in my 16 M6, they just need the tone rings. The fatter Axle unit is intended to go in the drivers side if I remember correctly but they will fit in either side as except for shaft diameter difference which is done to lessen wheel hop. They need tone rings is all which it sounds like you already have them swapped over. Your good to go.

Got the axle in but again jammed at getting that friggin’ knuckle back on. Not much luck pushing that sleeve back, so I’ll screw with it another day. I’m done for now… and where the hell did that friggin’ 18mm socket roll off to?
