You must be from Minnesota or something. The only person I’ve ever heard it called that is my dad who grew up in Minnesota. 
I'm from all over, but that piece of my vernacular comes from Vermont.
But to be fair, there were both creeks and cricks, with creeks being larger than cricks, and both being smaller than streams, and certainly smaller than rivers.
