With all these EPA changes, why haven't they eliminated the Gas Guzzler tax?

Do you think it was for anything else besides just a source of income? Taxing your car for using more gas does nothing to offset the impact, besides providing more tax dollars

They did away with the EV credit, I don’t see them doing away with the guzzler tax. Right to choose, but pay what it costs - pretty much how it going to go with everything. Let’s say they eliminate property taxes in some states. They’ll make up for it elsewhere, but you have a right to choose those other items you buy etc that will have an additional tax. Same with a gas guzzling car. You can choose not to buy one

It never occurred to me until you brought it up, but yeah, and I wanted a refund on the ~$5100 I've paid those basterds besides!

My 17 Cat has 3600 miles on it. It has guzzled less fuel than the eco liberal crowd's four banger! This tax was total BS. Very few people put 20,000 miles a year on their Cat.

Plus, don't we pay tax on each gallon of gas we purchase?? We go through more gas; we pay more tax! No need for an added tax just to screw the consumer

They used to call this kind of tax a luxury Tax. because of the price of the car. That didn't sound American enough.

Pickups cost much the same and get way worse mileage than the cars paying gas guzzler taxes! I had a 2015 6.4 HD 4x4 Ram that was lucky to get an average of 11mpg! Only kept that gas hog for a few months…

I can’t think of a single tax that was started and then dropped completely. That includes all the temporary taxes that schools and gov. “Needs” for pet projects.

Federal as far as I know. With all the EPA changes it should be gone for 2026. Guess we'll see.

What makes you think so? I looked it up, doesn't apply to trucks for whatever reason. The only thing I can think of is if they cancel it, then would people who previously paid it be due a refund.....I'd think they could do it in such a way that wouldn't be a thing. It is based on fuel mileage legislation from 1978 though.

I think landline phone bills still have a tax to wire the western US with telephone lines.

It will be replaced with a Amperage Guzzling Tax.

Well, manufacturers would probably just add it to the cost of the vehicle since people have already been paying the extra anyway.

  1. You pay tax on the vehicle purchase itself
  2. You pay an extra gas guzzler tax no matter how much you drive it
  3. You pay to register it yearly (at least in NH) - tax for use of public roadways while driving that vehicle no matter how much you drive
  4. You pay to inspect it yearly (at least in NH) - My car is new, it doesn't need to be inspected. Essentially tax for owning it at that point.
  5. You pay tax on fuel that goes in it
  6. You pay tax on tires that go on it (not in NH but most states)
  7. You pay tolls (tax) to travel and use state owned roadways you drive on in it
It's literally never ending
