This is some pretty good info showing a JLT on the dyno on a Durango Hellcat vs stock air box.

Full Vid:

Difference shown between dash IAT reading, log IAT reading, and what they're actually measuring:

Analysis:

Spoiler alert, it gained like 25hp/25tq mainly in the upper RPM. I'm not sure how much difference that would make in MPH in the 1/4 but probably not a lot.

JLT sent me an email today about the durango. I guess if I were racing dyno's it would be different. The jlt and legmaker, same day, ran slower times then the stock air box on my car. Wasn't much though. Maybe with either on my car and tuned for that intake it would be different

I wish these tests were done with the hoods closed. It seems the open intakes would have a clear advantage.

I think OST run the stock airbox on their shop car, or at least they did last time I saw it. Probably pull the filter and be almost the same as a CAI. I tried pulling the filter in the stock box and didn't pick up anything so these newer intakes are pretty dang good OEM. No denying that. Literally the only reason I got a CAI is because SRT went to it OEM. I figured there must have been a reason.

I'm sure having big cool air intakes like the Demon hood as the 19+ Hellcat hoods has something to doing with SRT going to that open airbox.

That's the reason I never installed that little clear plastic thing over the vent on mine. I figure it'll either flow air over the filter from the headlight hole/tube or pull in some fresh air from the vent if it's creating enough vacuum for that. Those vents look good but they annoy me when I wash the car.

Same thing I was gonna say, with hood open & fans running at it, the open filter gets good cool fresh air.
With the stock box it's not getting the same air flow, especially with it sitting still.

Here you go. Not a Hellcat but what you are saying about the hood open. Crazy pick up on the dyno but the 2nd video tells what really happens at the track

The 1 thing I want to modify, is another inlet tube to the stock box, but doesn't seem to have a good spot around the grill area to add another tube. I think more fresh cool air & ram air to the stock box is the ticket.

I've already modified a stock airbox lower but haven't got the guts to drill a hole behind the grill..lol

The mod looks to be more of a Challenger thing. I'm not seeing anyway to do that on a Charger

Interesting thread. I don't think I would block the bottom. I'm curious where the extra air will go when say cruising down the highway at speed when the throttle body is only cracked
I don't think I would block the bottom either, just needs more ram air Captain, LOL.

Geeze those tests in the videos were pointless. They test the car cold make a boat load of HP then all shrug when they loose power after 17 dyno pulls and heat soak LOL. VMP should know better. At the track, they go back and forth but change the tune at the same time. Where's the follow up video with the JLT intake the tease at the end of the second video? I think it made zero difference either way personally. Unless something's a restriction you won't see gains from changing it.

I did learn there's a JLT race filter that is just the screen and no media though, that may be interesting for the track.

Here's a little more data to chew on. Some people live by them, others thinks they're garbage, but here's what a 1/4 mile stats calculator says. I was curious if 30hp would even show any change in projected MPH. These calculators assume perfect everything from weather to gearing so take it with a grain of salt.

I used Wallace Racing: http://www.wallaceracing.com/et-hp-mph.php

4300lbs car at 500HP = 11.93 @ 113.25
4300lbs car at 530HP = 11.70 @ 115.47 (which is a lot more than I'd have thought)

4300lbs car at 1000HP = 9.47@ 142.68MPH
4300lbs car at 1030HP = 9.38 @ 144.09MPH

4300lbs car at 1500HP = 8.27 @ 163.32
4300lbs car at 1530HP = 8.22 @ 164.40

Matters more on the lower power car due to percentage change I reckon.

We used to use 10 hp is 1 mph but we were looking at 14 second cars back then. I knew the faster you went it does change. Thought mid 9's would be 20hp for 1 mph. It appears it is closer to 30hp

Been saying that for a long time:)
