I have the mechanical skills and capability, but I do not have the specific "engine build" experience such as what @16GoManGoHC2 shared during his build.

There is a definite tribal knowledge in really building a solid engine that doesn't either have excessive blow-by, or runs too tight, or eats its own bearings...

I have known people that have built short blocks in their garage and know people that run 7's in the qtr that could build their own but have someone else done it for different reasons. I have had 3 short blocks built and it made more sense to me to have them done by a shop that does it all the time. Everything thing else from taking it apart and swapping parts out I have done myself

I've built "street" motors before, and even a Detroit diesel but I know my limitations.
