Now's the perfect time to make it a 48x58 instead, Jon.

It never matters what size you make it you will always need bigger down the road. These things have a way of filling up 1678624105007.png

My garage now is already 26’ deep so I wonder how big of a difference 4’ really is really just need more width
You are really going to have to do a layout on paper of what you want. I know that 26' deep is enough room for a double cab dually and just enough space to walk around one end of it. I know that 24" wide is enough for 2 cars side by side but not enough room to open the doors fully. I know 11'6'' is enough height for a 2 post lift if it's positioned between 2 trusses. These were garages that were already built and I made do.
I suggest you log onto Garage Journal to get ideas. my lift.JPG

I’m 40x60 and still run out of space. Have to park my truck outside all summer because it’s too much of a PIA to move everything to get the mower or tractor out.

If you go to Garage Journal, hide your money because you’ll find a million ways to spend it over there.

As mentioned earlier, go as big as you can within your budget… adding square footage doesn’t increase cost proportionately… it was cheaper than I expected. I should have gone bigger in every dimension but my budget wouldn’t allow it. Happy with my space, don’t get me wrong, but it does get cramped on occasion.

Only build what you can't change later. Leave all of the gingerbread out. You can add that later if needed. Build square footage.

I know what you’re saying, any windows or extra doors and stuff just do later because they can be added, can’t easily increase the sq ft of the structure itself

No. Put in everything structural including doors and windows, otherwise it will never get done.

Insulation, extra lighting, etc can be added.

You may want to put fixed glass windows up high for better illumination, security and cost.

Use Lift Master for your door opener so you won’t need a ceiling mounted motor and track
