Also getting them up to temp helps keep the cats intact. So high temps are good for the motor, but bad for performance because it’ll run better when it’s cooler than hotter (in some cases) … pick one.
My concern isn’t the 203* it’s the fact that the colder thermostat should be maintaining a cooler than stock temperature.

I had a Motorad originally I think, been a couple years, and mine failed so I replaced it with a Mishimoto and it's worked great. It's a 180 and I'll see 185 on the screen. Once it hits 192 I'll hear the fans for a moment and then back to 185 lickity split.

This is the one in my car: https://amzn.to/3zVPmk9

The initial open on the Motorad always seems to be over 185, they have been like that since the old days. I don't think that's strange and IMO is a good thing because it helps prevent the CEL of 3 consecutive starts not hitting an initial temperature... if it opened later around 180-185 and then stayed open I think it's doing it's thing. Now the whole concept of partial opening, that's kind of new to me. How do we know? I don't disagree with swapping to the Mishimoto as it seems to have such a good track record.

That seems about right, 180s seem to open around 185, and don't fully open until about 15 degrees or so above their rating.

Try a digital thermometer to double check the reading, but that Motorad seems to be normal.

I wouldn't assume that an old cooking thermometer reads within 10 degrees.

Yep a meat thermometer is definitely not accurate. Picking up a heat gun tomorrow for future use.

Truth lol…

Let me know if you need any of that purple Mopar antifreeze. I've got 2 gallons downstairs.
I actually started to worry cause I couldt find mine, eventually found it behind some chemicals and cleaning supplies.

What did wife say about putting thermostats in her pots? This is like a completely random question I have no experience with.

Did you have the 180 T stat installed during your build?

The mishimoto is one of the best.

Glad you only have the purple puddle Cause you could have had a blown engine puddle.

Linda :)

Neither do I, single as a pringle. Been taking an absence of leave from the dating scene. Last misses that I was fooling around with I had to kick out of the house and throw her shit on the lawn.

Yep everything is good, car is cooling as expected. Very happy.

The on that failed was one that I bought from Jet directly off Amazon, it was good while it lasted. The one I just purchased was from HHP and is working as expected.

Glad you got it going, the one I had that went bad was from HHP, they refunded my money & that's when I bought from local O'Reilly auto parts, so if it goes bad again, it's right around the corner.

Testing T stats last night, one is out of motor before rebuild, it’s NOT going back in. Got it from HHP, at 205 just started openning, it says 180 on it. One I have new in box that says EVENFLOW on box, same design, same insignia in the stat well where temp rating is stamped, started to open at 185, full open at 190, on cool down fully closed at 178. I tested a 160 I have as well, same insignia inside it, it was fully open by 170 and closed back up at 155. I have no idea the OEM on these??? I won’t be using the 160 so if anyone wants it let me know, $25 shipped. I just ordered a new $50 180 Misimoto last night, will test it too when it arrives. T stats where offset in pot and pot offset on burner to keep direct heat away from their operating end. Heat applied slowly so units had time to respond to heat change, tested with digital gauge, I’ve done this with every t stat I’ve ever changed, I hate antifreeze about as bad as caulking so repeat work for a non working t stat isn’t in my game plan ever so I test them before use, most times old one and new one in same pot just like this, my wife loves it lol. Now I know why my fans ran so much, t stat I was using SUCKED!! Look into the milodon also. Has a different design
I think this is the one I would have but would need to check the part number. 16406 is the correct number. I did have to take the rubber ring around the stock on and put it on this on. Comes right off

I ordered one, I’ll test it next to the Misimoto, it looks like a Robert Shaw unit, I’ve used them in the past with success
